Thermal Limits
Running tools above their rated Surface Feet per Minute (SFM) causes exponential heat build-up. In titanium and super-alloys, exceeding SFM by even 10% can cause instantaneous edge failure. Always start at the lower end of the carbide manufacturer's recommended SFM range.
Chip Thinning
When Radial Depth of Cut (RDOC) is less than 50% of the tool diameter, the actual chip thickness generated is less than the programmed feed per tooth. You must increase the programmed feed rate to maintain the target chip load, preventing the tool from rubbing and work-hardening the material.
Spindle Harmonic Warning
Certain calculated RPMs will align with the natural frequency of your spindle and toolholder combination, causing severe chatter. If chatter occurs, adjust RPM up or down by 5-10% to break the harmonic resonance before decreasing feed.
